Starting your own business to many is often a long time dream. It may have been festering for years until the time was right for a host of reasons. Is instinct alone enough? Most entrepreneurs have pretty good basic instincts when it comes to their self preservation or success. All were generating high six and seven figure incomes ranging in experience from 6-20 years. All varied by gender, product or service, geography, market style and so on. I feel quite comfortable in saying that if someone has a clear vision and can put their ego on the sidelines occasionally to learn, no business should ever fail.

I would like to share an insight with you. It is most common to entrepreneurs. There is an internal struggle going on emotionally and internally that is at a subconscious level. It is very powerful and most can’t articulate it and are oblivious to its being or impact on them. Most entrepreneurs have since an early age strived for “independence” often known as self sufficiency. They have made choices early about what is best for them, ignoring parents and authority. Usually they are enduring the consequences of defying authority and structure. I had more than one trip to a school principal’s office, incurred the discipline of parents and so on. By the age of 16 I was emotionally and economically independent. After all, that was my goal just as it is to some extent with all developing humans. I just seemed to have my foot on the gas more than others and so to me the consequences along the way were nothing more than speed bumps. I’m not suggesting breaking the law, but breaking the rules if they don’t make sense is the norm for entrepreneurs. Perhaps making up the rules is a better way to say it. Practicality and expediency are drivers for entrepreneurs; compliance is a constraint and de-motivator. It is interpreted as interference. Ok here comes the connection and reason why many fail. Adults who have developed strong independence have a difficult time allowing themselves to be in first stage learning environments again. Acquiring key skill sets may require first stage learning experiences. First stage learning requires the learner to be dependant while they are being taught. Being dependant is so scary and repulsive to some they will choose failure as an unintended consequence.

Long term success has many elements. Being able to be self analytical and open to learning new skill sets is a must to avoid the painful consequences of “You don’t know what you don’t know”. Solidifying your vision becomes your number one task above everything else. Once you have accomplished this you begin to attract others and leverage your time and resources. Getting help is a choice.

Let us check out some of the common problems that self employment brings in, and how you can strive to overcome these problems:-

1. The most commonly faced problem in self employment is the sudden responsibility. You have to manage every part of the business yourself, and that could really be intimidating. But then, you can easily overcome this problem by hiring people to work for you. One word of advice here – do not hire people just because you know them, hire them for their talent. And hire people on a freelance basis, since you can then easily build good working patterns with them.

2. Finance is a very significant problem, and most businesses are nipped in the bud due to lack of it. In self employment ventures, there is also a huge need for contingency expenses, and these happen because generally you do not know how much the business is going to cost you. However, if you make a clear analysis at the outset and talk with someone who is already into the business, you will know most of these overheads in advance. Also, there are financial institutions that will readily give you money. But, you must speak with them even before your venture starts and know how to approach them when the time comes.

3. Be prepared for slumps. That is a very common bane of self employment. There will be periods when you will have no work to do. That is the reason why you must always take at least one extra project. Take at least one project that is not so strict on the deadlines and will be your backup if some of the better ones were to fade out. Most self employed people use this ploy. They retain some low paying jobs just tucked away for a rainy day.

4. In self employment, if you are not dynamic, you will go out like a dwindling light bulb. You will have to keep up with market ups and downs. Sometimes, there will be problems of comparison. Clients will compare you with your rivals. If you are keeping a higher price than your competitors, then you have to keep something better than them. You will also have to upsize or downsize your business with changing market trends.

That’s how self employment is actually. You create the venture and then it starts controlling you. But if you are well aware of what is going to happen, and can anticipate things, then you will always be on tops. Self employment requires a bit of courage, and you have to develop it within you.

I would think one of the most important benefits of self employment are that you can forge your own affiliations and associations with people. In most cases, when we are working for someone else, we are stuck with people we do not much like. We may have to do business with people whom we do not ethically prefer to be our clients. Such things happen when we are servants of someone else. But, in self employment, the person gets the extreme freedom of picking and choosing. And that is a very great benefit.

Another important advantage that most people don’t speak about is that self employment gives you liberty to dabble in all aspects of the business. While this could be intimidating to some of us, for creatively-minded people, being able to have a say in every aspect of the business could be very enriching. When you are self employed with a business to call your own, you can manage the production in the way you want, advertise with your own creative inputs, invest in the way you want, employ people whom you want to work with you… in fact, you can give your business your own identity. When you are self employed, your business is just an extension of yourself. You are not a part of a huge enterprise and working the way they want – you are your own master.

But the best benefit is that self employment can give you satisfaction in more ways than one. There is a total improvement of your lifestyle. Your work hours are not bound as much as they would be in a job, you can take as much or as less work as you want. If there is an event in your family, such as a wedding, you are free to arrange your schedules accordingly. And you get a very deep satisfaction that you are really creating something, not just helping someone else to sell their stuff. That is one of the biggest reasons why you should contemplate of entering into your own enterprise.

Here, I list the kinds of people who I think will never do well in a self employment opportunity. These categories are taken from the top of my head, and there will surely be some more of them. But these are good enough to give a preliminary idea of the kind of person you need to be to become self employed.

1. If you do not have any kind of drive to create your own thing, then you are better off in a daytime job. Self employment is not for you. All self employment opportunities, whatever their nature might be, require you to create. You have to have at least some talent in you that common people do not have. You should be able to create things, and then love them enough to let others partake in your creation.

2. You have to be money-minded. If you are just thinking of entering into a self employment opportunity without any head of business, you are doomed. This is because the entire onus of expenses and investments will fall on you. You will have to sometimes bargain with your clients and get good deals. You have to have those talents.

3. Every person in a self employment venture needs to be a task manager. Oftentimes, the burden of managing a lot of responsibilities will fall on your shoulders. You will have to look after not just the production, but you will also be responsible for the promotion and the investment. So, you have to have good skills in managing all these kinds of works at once. You will need to allocate different times of the day for different purposes.

4. This is very important, though not often said – you will have to have affection for your own self employment venture and you will have to nourish it like a baby. You don’t have to do this in a job, because someone else has already established it. So, can you muster enough love and affection for the business opportunity you are giving birth to? You might have to sometimes spend long hours on it, do things that you don’t like much, and even stretch yourself to the limit. Be prepared for all this.

Contrary to what newbies feel, self employment is not a piece of cake. You need to have specific qualities to do good here. As I said before, there are some people who have natural talents to be self employed and then there are those who cannot be self employed unless they learn and improve.

Knowledge of the public relations “game” is one important tool, a tool that can guide the steps of a little-known, published author. One expert on book promotion has called publicity the less mysterious cousin of advertising. Publicity can call attention to a published book.

Every author generally has opportunities to create book-related publicity. Every author should watch for newsworthy information that the author might send to the editor of a local paper. Copywriting is considered one of the most essential online marketing skills that any marketer could have. Even if you have the hungriest market you still need the power of words in order to sell your product or service. There is scarcely any other area of writing where the power of the pen and the power of persuasion come together more effectively than in copy advertising.

But the question is how do you become the best copywriter that you can be? How can you reach beyond the mediocre to excelling at your craft? I would like to list below what I consider the most important elements that go into making a good copywriter.

1. Copy great copywriters. Yes, one of the best ways you can become a good copywriter is by copying the Master. It’s the same principle of ‘beholding and becoming changed, and as the saying goes “birds of a feather flock together”. The more you read someone, the more the words filter into your mind and the more you become like them. It’s a matter of reading what you would like to write like. So the more great copy you read, the more great copy you’ll write.

2. Learn the principles of writing well. Keep in mind that copywriting is copy-writing. There is no way you can become a great copywriter without learning how to write, how to use the language, and how to engage the reader. This involves learning the principles of grammar, how to structure a sentence, the elements of style, flow, and cadence-in fact, all the elements that go into good writing. Many people overlook the importance of learning how to write well why they are learning how to write persuasively. But in order to be persuasive, you must be able to use the elements of style and grammar to communicate to your readers.

3. Study marketing. In order to write persuasively you must be able to understand the audience to whom you are writing. Good copywriting is not only made up of persuasive writing but it is also made up of persuading the right people. In order to persuade people you must understand feelings, attitudes and their values. In other words, you must be able to scratch where it itches. This is one of the reasons why it is very important that you specialize in one area so you can understand your audience so well that you’re able to write to them as though you’re writing to a friend.

4. Study successful ads. Not only would you want to study successful copywriters but you also want to study advertisements that have been very successful in the past. As you study these advertisements you would come to realize what works and what does not work in a particular market. Not only would you be able to model your own advertising from these advertisements but you also can get a feel for what successful copywriting is all about. This principle can be applied to any other market, where you study what works in the past in order to influence your work in the future.

5. Get your writing critiqued by others. It doesn’t matter how good a copywriter you are, every writer has blind spots and therefore need to have their work reviewed and assessed by others. Especially when you’re just starting out you may need a mentor or coach or someone who has enough experience so that they can evaluate your copy. This is not a place for big ego. It is the simple fact that it doesn’t matter how good a writer you are there are times when, because of being so close to your own work, you will not be able to see the mistakes that you have made and therefore you need another critical eye in the equation. So it is well if you have another person or a group of other copywriters who are more experience than you to review your work and suggests ways in which you can improve it.

6. Stay informed. Even doctors who have to study for seven years and more before they can receive a license have to stay abreast by reading journals and take refresher courses. The same thing applies to copywriters as well. You must be subscribed to the latest direct-marketing news and the top newsletters. Even though the principles of marketing may be the same there are new techniques and application that other copywriters can privy you to. Especially online where new techniques and technologies are being introduced.

7. Read, read, read. Even if you decide to specialize in one area you need to read widely and generally. You can never tell when you would need an idea that you can include in your copy. And you also want to be aware of popular trends in media so that you can tie these in with your copy. You can’t isolate yourself to any one area simply because you specialize in that area. If any type of writers need a general education it is a copywriter. You need to stay aware of what’s going on in your market and also what’s going on in the world at large. Simply because you would be able to match the information you get there with your marketing message and often you can use this information as a springboard to get your users attention.

8. Practice, practice, practice. Writing is a discipline. But the only way you can get better at writing is to write continually, even when you don’t feel like writing. This doesn’t mean that you have to keep writing all day but you should write often enough so that you develop the discipline to write even when you don’t feel like writing. You’ll find the more you write the easier it will become. As you develop this discipline you would realize that writing will become more rewarding. You need to find a place, environment and a time of day that best suits you. But the more regularly you write the easier the process would become for you.

So there you have it. Those are the steps you can follow to sharpen your copywriting skills. And when you knock one out of the park always remember to reward yourself. Don’t wait for anyone else to pat you on the shoulder. Learn to reward yourself!
