Almost everyone wants to find the perfect job. But, what are those basic preparation steps you need to know when invited for a job interview. Good preparation will help you in the interview process. Study and find out as much as you can about the company you are interested in. Draft a review and list of questions about the company especially, in regards to the job you are interviewing for. The review should include the products and services offered by the company. It is important to have a basic understanding of the products and services. This will give you more confidence when you are asked specific questions about the company’s product and services.

Bring a copy of your resume or curriculum vitae (CV), which should includes all the information that would be of interest to the interviewer. Ensure it is written in a professional manner and format. Do a spell check on the document.

During the interview, look at your interviewer’s eyes, because eye to eye contact shows you have confidence and are interested in the discussion. It also shows your enthusiasm about the company.

Dress up professionally or in a manner appropriate for the job. If the company requires a suit, then wear a suit that is conservative and professional looking. This will make a big difference with the interviewer. It’s been said that interviewers make their decision within the first five to ten minutes. So first impressions are very important.

When asked questions, try to provide a response in less than one minute. However, this doesn’t mean you have to answer the question with a simple yes and no. Sometimes, long answers can make the interviewer lose their patience and interest. You might even lose you concentration and drift off to a different subject unrelated to the question.

Listening is important. Listen carefully and answer the questions directly. If you do not understand the question, ask them to clarify it for better understanding. Do not answer a question until you are certain what has been asked.

Be prepared to share your previous activities and experience. Present yourself as clear and confident as possible. When asked, give specific examples that describe how you handled or solved a difficult situation.  You need to show the interviewer why they should hire you over the other candidates.

When the interviewer is finished asking questions or even during the interview, you should ask questions. This will not only help you to learn more about the company but will show that you are proactive and interested to learn. Show your interest in the company to ensure it is indeed the right place for your career path.

Last but not least, send a “Thank You” note the same day after the interview. Summarize your interest in the job and why they should hire you and thank them for their time. Even if you are not hired, maybe the interviewer can become a great contact person.

The more confident and honest you are the better. Try to ensure there is no confusion as to what they can expect from you and what compromises you are willing to make.
