There are really only three steps to get you setup and ready to start advertising on Google, 1) creating an account, 2) writing your first ad and 3) submitting your billing information.
The first thing you need to do is sign up and get yourself a google adwords account. Go to Google and at the bottom of the screen click on the ‘Advertising Programmes’ link at the bottom of the page.
Then:
• Click on the Adwords homepage
• Click ‘try now’ at the top right of the screen
• Select the standard edition (you need to have an active website for the standard edition, if you don’t have an active
website you are not really at the stage to start experimenting with Google Adwords!)
• On the next screen it will ask you if you have a Google account. You may already have an account for gmail, Google Adsense, Google Analytics etc, all of them will give you a Google account which you can enter at this step. If you click the button that says you don’t have an account, it will then ask for some details to create an account for you.
• If you have used an existing Google account, sign in to your new Adwords account. If you have created a new account, then you need to click the verification link in the email Google sent to you.
• Create a dummy campaign to get started. After you log in, click on the ‘create my first campaign’ button and you will be taken through the Google Adwords campaign setup process.
• Just enter dummy information for now, put in a dummy name, choose any country, put in a fake ad and choose your
keyword as ‘123456789’ or something similar so it will not actually show.
• Once you have completed setting up your Adwords campaign it will show a summary screen where you can check if everything is OK. If so, then click ‘continue to billing.’ Here you’ll enter your billing information, select your timezone and agree to the terms and conditions. If you select the direct debit payment method, then you will have to wait while the system goes through the approval process.
Personally I use a credit card payment at the end of the month for my Adwords account, but you also have the choice to utilize prepay where you deposit money into your account for Adwords to use. Doing so will reduce any risks on your behalf , especially if you were to accidentally leave an ad running and inadvertently built up a huge bill. With the credit card option you’d automatically get charged. If you used the prepay option, then the ad would just stop running after the money in your account runs out.
Please remember there is a 5 – $10 setup charge for your account that Google will bill you for after setup.
The choice is yours, but make sure after you setup your billing you go to the ‘campaign summary’ page listed at the
top of the screen and click on the check-box next to your dummy campaign and delete it! Or you may get charged for the ad campaign!
